So here's a couple of times remembered by Chris Rattenbury that were emailed to me and which, he very kindly allowed me to publish on the the site.
"I remember attending a party near windy corner, some little mod chick,
you know the black and white square dress brigade. Anyway, I was on a
mission to snog this bird and help myself to one or two Specials LP's, LOL.
During this time these lads (army or marines) were bullying their way around
and a mass fight broke out.
It was odd as I sat protecting these LP's in my trench coat next to Chris
Hepple (who did karate), I said are you not going to defend those getting
duffed in, he said "NO", I said hold these LPs, I jumped up and chinned this
lad he went out like a light and then jumped on top of one the others (who
had John Tsia by the throat, oh yeah and 2 others hanging off him LOL). Fun
days, those modettes were silly chickys just asking for it, I only wish I
had the money to date them all LOL. (find Fletch), photos will be dragged
out today. "
"I have had 1979 on my mind all day my friend, Oct 3rd buy a Vespa 150, by
the weekend I raided my old man's wardrobe and bought some hush-puppies. I
found this brown Fred Perry long sleeve with a few stripes down the left
breast everyone wanted it and one day strapped for cash you bought it from
me!
Milden, Whitelegg, Holgate, Nixey and myself met up with instant new
friends, Bohay, Gladman and Moxon to form a new gang of mods. Fresh into
college and straight into 60's revival, my first night at the Mermaid was
electric and so many lads wanted to be my friend. We came together for one
thing being a MOD!
Imagine hanging out with the young chickies at Manhattans, my first chick
was Tracey Whitehead (she wore mod clothes on the next date) and then a
string of them after. Then on to the Mermaid, a full pack fun filled evening
and by the way I never bought or wore a tonic suit from Burtons or Fosters
and never owned a pair of Jam shoes, come off it hush-puppies were cool and
Chelsea boots were groovy man!
I soon met Tibby, Boo, Hepple, Dicks and Foster many more instant friends.
The story how I met Karl Dicks began when he was seeing this chick
from my chef course, she lied to her where-abouts and said she was
with me that night! Bitch, my college mates tried to put the scaries on me
after I passed this 6 foot 5 inch guy at the door. "who the fuck is Karl
Dicks" I said. They replied that big fucker outside the door and he's going
to kick your head in. Their faces dropped when I said "he don't scare me,
I'll have it out with him now". I was going to fight the fucker win or
lose, I asked him straight "are you Karl Dicks", he said "yeah why"?
I said " I hear you're after me"? He bottled it (I'm sure) and said "no
mate I don't know who you are"? "CHRIS RATTENBURY" I told him.
Next Tech dance I went up to him again and ask if he was Karl Dicks? He
bought me a drink and we have been friends ever since.
I'm sure Karl will tell you his drunken version but mine sticks. He will
know the Teignmouth crew and the few chickies. "
"My fav story is the Piggys gang fight! And the
court case where I had to appear, I got off but Moss mushroom (Tony Martin),
Bohay were put down with 3 Piggy's gang members, Den Lakin (and these 3
didn't ride mopeds). I remember punching in Dave Southey (Suzuki 250) and
Paul (Kawasaki KH250) nick-named (Boris, AKA Stretch-neck aka Seagull) he
still hates me for that but daren't go back there, he wore a cowboy hat
trailing behind his helmet, that night they chased Milden and me, kicking my
scooter and I was protecting Milden. At the lights mildew ran a red leaving
me to deal with these two divvy's, I called out to him, he left me, the
chicken (later to find out he banged on a door for help, what good was that,
turn and fight don't run! LOL), I had a fight with them and did them both,
the highlight of my career LOL. Good thing the next day, Dave who I upper
cutted right through his full face helmet later came to apologise as we went
to school together and said he always fancied his chances, the whole gang
never threatened me after that!!"
Thanks Chris for sharing this, they make the site what it is.........
